Small Animal
Rotating Internship

The Regional Veterinary Referral Center (RVRC) is one of the oldest and most well respected veterinary specialty centers in the Washington D.C./Northern Virginia area. We have had a very successful rotating small animal internship for almost 10 years. We rely on our interns to be an integral part of our team in order to offer outstanding, compassionate, empathetic and professional veterinary specialty care.

We offer specialty care in: cardiology, emergency/critical care, internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, neurology, radiation oncology, medical oncology and rehabilitative medicine with a licensed veterinary physical therapist. In addition to our specialties, our center houses an I-131 treatment center (Radiocat), in house cytopathology, ultrasound, digital radiography, linear accelerator, 3D Spiral CT and a MRI unit. Our in house diagnostic center allows you to get rapid and accurate patient analytic data to make informed patient decisions. As an intern at the RVRC, you will work closely with each service. You will spend approximately 50% of your time on emergency and critical care. The remainder of your internship will be rotating through the other hospital services as well as external rotations in high volume spay/neuter and ophthalmology. As an intern, your primary case responsibilities will occur while on emergency and critical care. You will work closely with our dedicated staff of emergency clinicians and specialists with ample back-up during times when you are ‘on your own’. There is no on-call duty. When you’re off, you’re off! Our interns do perform surgical procedures under the guidance of our staff doctors while on emergency. This is an advantage to you as an intern and not commonly offered in other programs. As an intern you will perform all emergency procedures and will be involved in case decisions from start to finish.

Interns will participate in weekly topic rounds, monthly journal club, monthly M&M rounds and be responsible for two grand rounds presentations. As an intern, you will often be the only intern on any given rotation giving you the unique opportunity of one-on-one time with that specialist.

Our internship program does an excellent job of preparing interns for residencies and specialty internships. We have a 100% placement rate of interns into specialty internships and residencies in the last 5 years.

Emergency/Critical Care Internship 2017-2018

Our motto ‘We Love Them like You Do’ is where it begins and ends with us, remembering that each patient we care for is loved and is special to someone. Our goal is to offer outstanding, compassionate, empathetic and professional veterinary specialty care. Simply stated, we offer the very best care to our patients while understanding the client’s needs and tailoring the care offered to meet these needs.

As an emergency/critical care intern, you will work closely with our dedicated staff of emergency clinicians, two of which are residency trained in emergency and critical care medicine. Our interns do perform surgical procedures under the guidance of our staff doctors while on emergency. This is an advantage to you as an intern and not commonly offered in other programs. As an intern you will perform all emergency procedures and will be involved in case decisions from start to finish.

You will be expected to participate in weekly topic rounds, monthly journal club, monthly M&M rounds and be responsible for two grand rounds presentations. You will also be involved in teaching the rotating interns and will be presenting some topic rounds. Additionally, you will be required to submit a publication during your year with us.

Our emergency/critical care internship program is new this year, but we have had a small animal rotating internship for the last 9 years and we have done an excellent job of preparing interns for residencies and specialty internships. We have a 100% placement rate of interns into specialty internships and residencies in the last 5 years.

We currently have an open position for our emergency and critical care specialty internship for 2017-2018. We are seeking an individual who has either completed a rotating internship or has extensive experience in emergency medicine. This individual should also have a strong clinical knowledge base and the aptitude to work within a collaborative team of specialists while providing exemplary veterinary care to our patients. We expect our ECC specialty intern to be enthusiastic in their drive to continue their education while also serving in a leadership role to our current rotating internship class.

A Virginia license is required, there are no exceptions. You are welcome to visit and interview and are encouraged to do so. Phone interviews will be arranged for those eligible applicants unable to visit for on-site interview.
